A Legacy of Excellence

Crockett Chambers

Justice William Crockett (1924–2007) was appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1969. When the Court’s appeal division was established in 1988, he served full-time in the Court of Criminal Appeal until retiring in 1996, by which time he was the Court’s longest-serving judge.

At the turn of the millennium, five prominent barristers—Robert Richter, Con Heliotis, Philip Dunn, Remy van de Wiel, and Terry Forrest—shared chambers and a deep respect for Justice Crockett. They unanimously agreed to name their shared chambers ‘Crockett Chambers’ in his honour. Within four years, all original members had taken silk.

As the chambers evolved, the group moved to the heart of the Melbourne legal district in Lonsdale Street, driven by a vision to grow and refine their practice. The goal was simple but ambitious: to build the finest criminal chambers in Australia.

Carefully selected new members, both senior and junior counsel, were chosen for their commitment to excellence. The structure allowed junior barristers to take on complex matters with confidence, with senior barristers providing immediate support and advice. Solicitors could brief juniors confidently, knowing experience and insight were always close at hand.
